Dundee is a flourishing regional shopping centre for an extensive rural hinterland, with a large and wealthy catchment area.
The nature of the population distribution and ease of access and parking within the city centre means that Dundee benefits from a large inflow of consumers, primarily from the wider Scottish area.
There are 310,660 residents within the core and secondary catchment areas, with spending patterns significantly above the Scottish average.
With
an ever-expanding quality shopping sector, Dundee is now enjoying
the fruits of more than a decade's worth of partnership planning
between private, academic and public organisations, and development
still continues apace.
The retail offer is well defined over a broad pedestrianised area and encompasses a number of streets and three covered shopping centres. However, the core offer is primarily concentrated within the Overgate, the Wellgate Shopping Centre and the surrounding pedestrianised area of Murraygate / High Street.
The
retail offer has seen a considerable shift in the past five
years with a significant number of retailers new to Dundee such
as The Disney Shop, Mango, H&M Hennes, T K Maxx, and French
Connection. Designer and high street retailers, small independents
and specialist stores vie for consumers' attention, among a
mix of coffee shops, restaurants and family-oriented pubs.
Schemes like CCTV and the DUNCAN anti-crime partnership have also been central to the effort to promote a safe and child-friendly atmosphere in the city centre.
Retailers, the local authority, the City Centre Action Group and Tayside Police have formed ways of working to take the city centre forward to a prosperous future for all.
